new project!
My mother, Macie. 1950s
My House Is Covered In Ice.
Power went out last night and just came back on (15 hours later). My house was 49 degrees. But I’m lucky… so many others haven’t had power for days. And it’s finally warming up so this ice storm will be over soon. Even better, the sun is out! I haven’t worked for an entire week because of the road conditions so I drew a picture, made cookies, then put myself to work on my newest project!
The new project is a creative non-fiction novel about my mother Macie’s diaries that I found after she died. Yowza! This has turned my life upside down.
Here’s a sample of a letter found in one of them from the 1950s:
Dear Macie,
Imagine my surprise when I received a letter from your father. I found it on my desk at work today. He wrote to discuss you, and told me you’re engaged to Earl. He doesn’t approve of you running around with Betty and says - I’ll quote him here, “The two of those girls are whores and that bitch needs to be taught a lesson.” How enlightening. I should meet your father, sounds like a swell guy. Well, give that fiancé of yours a big kiss with a baseball bat for me next time you see him! And by the way, are you still looking for work? If so I’ll see what I can do for you here. Our secretary is leaving soon and we’ll need a part-time typist.
Always Yours,
John
John was a good writer!
Stay tuned. There’s oh so much more to come!
